Welcome to the SPM Bolts Robotics and Coding Club.

Club members are using LEGO MINDSTORM EV3 educational tools to learning how to build robots and code them to move. Club meetings are every Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the library until March.

LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 Educational Resources

Students enjoy using the LEGO® Education Curriculum and we appreciate all the enormous resources LEGO® provides for learning how to building and code. There are 20 club members and they are 4th-8th graders.

The club will not compete at the First Lego League (FLL) competition this season, but the club might attend event if the club members are interested in an FLL going out activity. We would all learn more by watching the teams try to win the sport.

In the FIRST® LEGO® LEAGUE CHALLENGE. elementary and middle school-aged students research a real-world engineering challenge, develop a solution, and compete with LEGO-based robots of their own design.

Spokane Public School hosts the FLL Eastern Washington Qualifiers on either Dec 4 & 5 or the event is Dec 11 & 12. Once we know more about the dates,  we will pass on the info to everyone for maybe an extra curriculum club going out.

Programming is a key skill to develop for working in robotics.
Coding is essentially written instructions that a robot or computer program can read and then execute. … Robotics allows students to see their thinking in a real way as they go through trial and error until the task is accomplished and the robot’s motions are performed as originally intended.

Learning to code in Python

The club will use the EV3 Intelligent Brick to unleash the power of Python programming using MicroPython. We will install the EV3 MicroPython image onto any micro SD card and boot up the EV3 Brick for the brick to start programming straight away. We will learn to switching back to the standard LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 firmware. LEGO®  Education provided full documentation and sample API code to get us started at the link below:
